Precipitation Sensors

CWi Technical Ltd select sensors for inclusion in their systems based on quality, accuracy and reliability. If a sensor is in our list, it means we have the utmost confidence in its performance and reliability, and it fits the quality criteria for inclusion in datashare.

Rainfall is probably one of the most critical measurements to take, but the impact of installation on efficiency far outweighs any sensor quality assessments. However, assuming correct siting and installation, the sensors below can prove to be very relaible and accurate.

RG3

The RG3 Rain collector is a reliable tipping spoon collector which can be supplied with a measurement resolutuion of 0.2mm or 0.1mm. Its digital output can be accommodated by most loggers and many stand alone digital recorders. It can be supplied with pole montings, and is a good low cost gauge.

Its assessment by us takes account of the quality of the sensor for the price. A pole mounted version will set you back about £170.

RGB1-BP

The RGB1 with optional base plate for ground mounting and levelling is a much higher accuracy gauge. Its aerodynamic profile allows for a much higher catch efficieny than standard gauges. It is calibrated to 3dp and they come in 0.2mm tip models only.

They are fully automatic, and use a tipping bucket mechanism which also redcuces error compared to the tipping spoon which can lose accuracy in high intensity events due to the time taken to tip and return. This gauge and its quality do come at a cost though, but it is still a very affordable rain gauge.
